This ancient powerful meditation helps people deal with any strong emotions they are feeling (from whatever cause) - grief, anger, anxiety, fear, self-criticism - not to bypass the emotions but to feel and accept them into the heart, transmuting them into love/compassion.
It isn't a diversion from taking positive action, but rather a way to resource yourself so you can continue being present and taking action without emotional burnout and harmful/hateful reactivity.
